The Club was founded on 3rd August 1876 by W.T. Cook and 5 other stalwart gentlemen of Leek and is one of the oldest cycling clubs in Britain. Over the last 130 years the Club has held it's headquarters in many locations within Leek and for the past few years the Club has been sponsored in the true tradition of continental cycling by Den Engel Belgian Bar & Restaurant located in Stanley Street, Leek.
In 2006 the Club celebrated 130 years of cycling history with a series of cycle related activities culminating in the founding of The 130km Legbreaker Sportive Challenge. So popular was the event that it was run again in 2007 and is set to continue in the coming years.
Club activities include club nights which are held on the first Monday of each month in the HQ, Den Engel; and weekend runs, some starting on a Saturday afternoon and others on a Sunday morning. Check the Club website
www.leekcyclistsclub.co.uk for up-to-date-details. There is also a very active Forum which members use to post details of current activities.
During the late spring and summer evening rides take place, Mondays and Thursdays, starting at 6.00pm from Den Engel. These alternate between leisure rides and training rides.
In recent years through it's various activities the Club has raised many thousands of pounds in support of The County Air Ambulance, a service to which one Club member owes his life.
Although core activities are mainly centred around time trialling, members also enjoy road racing, especially TLI events and off-roading in and around the Staffordshire Moorlands and the Peak District.
New members are always welcome; please contact
secretary@leekcyclistsclub.co.uk or turn up at Den Engel Belgian Bar, Stanley Street, Leek around 8.00pm on the first Monday of any month.
