Fenwick's Assembly Grease is a water-resistant general-purpose assembly grease for bicycle components — the kind of product that belongs in every workshop and home mechanic's toolkit. It's used wherever a grease rather than a liquid lubricant or anti-seize compound is the right choice: bearings, headsets, bottom bracket cups, seatpost interfaces, pedal threads, and any metal-on-metal assembly point that benefits from a protective, water-resistant grease film. The 80ml tube format allows precise application without a grease gun, making it practical for targeted use on specific components.
The formula is water-resistant and adheres firmly to surfaces, providing a durable protective film that resists wash-out in wet conditions and prevents corrosion on metal contact surfaces over time. Applied correctly during assembly, it reduces wear at bearing and interface points, helps prevent components from seizing (particularly seatposts in frames), and makes future disassembly significantly easier. It's a straightforward, reliable grease that does what assembly grease should: protect components during and after assembly, resist water, and last.
For threaded components where anti-galling protection is the primary concern — particularly titanium interfaces — the Fenwick's Copper Anti-Seize or PTFE Anti-Seize are the more targeted options. Where should I use assembly grease on a bike?
The most common applications are: bearing races in headsets and bottom brackets, seatpost insertion into the frame (to prevent seizing), pedal threads (left and right), stem clamp bolts, quick release skewer threads, and any metal-on-metal interface that will be infrequently disassembled and exposed to water.
What is the difference between assembly grease and anti-seize?
Assembly grease is a general-purpose protective grease for bearings and metal interfaces. Anti-seize compounds — such as the Fenwick's Copper Anti-Seize or PTFE Anti-Seize — contain specific anti-galling agents (copper or PTFE) designed to prevent metal surfaces from cold-welding under pressure, which is particularly important for titanium interfaces. For most standard steel and aluminium threaded components, assembly grease is sufficient. For titanium, use anti-seize.
Can I use it on a carbon seatpost?
No — carbon seatposts require a dedicated carbon assembly paste, which is designed to increase grip and prevent slipping at low torque values. Assembly grease reduces friction, which is the opposite of what you need with carbon. Using grease on a carbon seatpost can cause it to slip at torque values below the manufacturer's specification.
How do I apply it without a grease gun?
The 80ml tube dispenses grease directly and precisely. For bearings, apply grease to the bearing race and work it in with a finger or small tool. For seatposts, apply a thin, even coat around the insertion area of the post. For threaded components, apply a small amount to the threads before fitting. A little goes a long way — you don't need to pack components with grease, just ensure all contact surfaces have a thin, even coating.
