Fenwick's Multi-Purpose Lubricant is a workshop staple — a versatile, corrosion-inhibiting lubricant that handles the broad range of lubrication tasks that come up in everyday bike maintenance. Cables, derailleurs, pivot points, brake mechanisms, gear internals, and general metal-on-metal contact points all benefit from a quality multi-purpose lube, and the 500ml format makes this a practical choice for workshops and riders who go through lubricant regularly.
The formula combines lubricants with corrosion inhibitors and water-displacing properties, making it effective in damp conditions where moisture ingress is a concern. It penetrates into cable outers, frees stiff pivot points, and provides a protective film on metal surfaces that resists rust and corrosion over time. It's the kind of product that earns its place in a workshop toolbox by being genuinely useful across a wide range of tasks — from freeing a seized bolt to keeping derailleur pivots moving freely through a wet winter.
Note: while suitable for chain lubrication in a pinch, a dedicated chain lube will generally outperform a multi-purpose lubricant for chain-specific use, particularly in wet or dry conditions where a formulation optimised for chain wear is preferable. For chains, browse our workshop and maintenance collection for dedicated chain lube options. Can I use it on my bike chain?
Yes — Fenwick's Multi-Purpose Lubricant will lubricate a chain effectively. However, for regular chain maintenance, a dedicated wet or dry chain lube is generally preferable as it's formulated specifically for chain wear, dirt resistance, and the conditions you ride in. The multi-purpose lube is better suited to cables, pivots, and general maintenance tasks.
Is it effective in wet conditions?
Yes — the formula displaces water and provides a moisture-resistant protective film, making it useful for treating components after washing or before riding in wet weather. It's particularly effective for protecting cables and pivot points from water ingress.
What is the difference between this and the Suspension Lube Spray?
The Fenwick's Suspension Lube Spray is specifically formulated for suspension components — forks, shocks, and dropper posts — and is safe on rubber seals. The Multi-Purpose Lubricant is a general-purpose product for cables, pivots, and metal components. Use the suspension lube for stanchions and shock shafts, and the multi-purpose lube for everything else.
How do I apply it to cables?
For cables, apply the lubricant to the cable where it enters the outer, then work the lever or shifter several times to draw the lubricant through. For pivot points and derailleur mechanisms, apply a small amount directly to the pivot and work the mechanism to distribute it evenly. Wipe away any excess to avoid attracting dirt.
