The Sapim Polyax is Sapim's premium brass spoke nipple with an articulating head — the key feature that distinguishes it from a standard nipple. The Polyax head is designed to pivot and self-align with the spoke angle, accommodating the lateral angle of the spoke as it runs from the hub flange to the rim drilling. This is particularly important on wheels with high flange offset, deep-section rims, or asymmetric drilling where the spoke angle is more pronounced — a standard nipple in these situations can bind or sit at an angle in the rim eyelet, creating stress concentrations that can lead to nipple or rim failure over time. The Polyax eliminates this by allowing the nipple head to align naturally with the spoke. Available in 12mm length in black brass, sold in a bag of 100.
Brass is the preferred nipple material for most wheel building applications — it is more corrosion-resistant than aluminium, easier to tension accurately, and less prone to seizing over time, making it the practical choice for training wheels, all-weather use, and any build where long-term reliability matters more than marginal weight saving. The black anodised finish provides additional corrosion protection and a clean aesthetic on black-rimmed builds. Compatible with standard 2mm spoke threads (the thread standard used by Sapim, DT Swiss, and most other spoke manufacturers). What does "Polyax" mean and why does it matter?
Polyax refers to the articulating (pivoting) head design of the nipple. Unlike a standard nipple where the head is fixed, the Polyax head can pivot to align with the angle of the spoke as it runs from the hub to the rim. This reduces stress on the nipple and rim eyelet when the spoke angle is not perfectly perpendicular to the rim — a common situation on modern wheels with high flange offset, deep rims, or asymmetric drilling. It's particularly recommended for these builds to avoid premature nipple or rim failure.
Why choose brass over aluminium nipples?
Brass is heavier than aluminium but significantly more corrosion-resistant and less prone to seizing over time. For training wheels, commuters, and any build used in wet or muddy conditions, brass is the practical choice. Aluminium nipples save a small amount of weight (typically 10–15g per wheel) but can corrode and seize, making future truing difficult. For race-day wheels where weight matters and the build will be maintained carefully, aluminium is appropriate. For everything else, brass is the better long-term choice.
What nipple length do I need?
12mm is the most common nipple length and suits most standard rim depths. If your rim has a deeper spoke bed or requires a longer nipple to allow adequate thread engagement, you may need 14mm or 16mm nipples. Check your rim manufacturer's specification or measure the depth of the spoke bed in your rim before ordering.
Are these compatible with all spokes?
Yes — the Sapim Polyax uses the standard 2mm spoke thread, compatible with spokes from Sapim, DT Swiss, Pillar, and most other spoke manufacturers. They are not compatible with non-standard thread sizes used by some proprietary spoke systems.
