The Shimano CN-M9100 is the flagship 12-speed chain shared across Shimano's top-tier road and MTB groupsets — the Dura-Ace R9200 and XTR M9100. It uses Shimano's HG+ (Hyperglide+) chain profile, engineered specifically to work with Hyperglide+ chainrings and cassette sprockets for shifts that are significantly faster and smoother than the previous HG system, particularly under load. The chain features Sil-Tec PTFE surface treatment on the inner and outer plates, reducing friction and improving wear resistance compared to an untreated chain. 126 links, supplied with a Quick Link for tool-free installation and removal. Compatible with the Shimano CS-R9200 Dura-Ace 12-speed cassette and FC-R9200 Dura-Ace chainset.
The CN-M9100 uses computer-optimised plate profiles with a super-narrow design to reduce weight and improve mud clearance, and hollow pins to reduce overall chain weight. The outer plate geometry is designed to reduce chain suck — where the chain sticks to the chainring on the downstroke rather than releasing cleanly. The chain is directional and must be installed with the Shimano logo facing outward. For 11-speed Dura-Ace or XTR builds, see the Shimano CN-HG901 11-speed chain. Is this chain compatible with SRAM or Campagnolo 12-speed groupsets?
The CN-M9100 uses Shimano's HG+ chain profile, which is optimised for Shimano Hyperglide+ chainrings and cassettes. While the chain width is broadly similar to other 12-speed chains, Shimano recommends using HG+ chains with HG+ components for optimal shifting performance. For SRAM AXS or Campagnolo 12-speed builds, use the chain specified by those manufacturers.
Does the chain need to be directional when installed?
Yes — the CN-M9100 is directional. Install with the Shimano logo and model number facing outward (away from the bike). Installing the chain in reverse will not damage the drivetrain but may result in slightly reduced shifting performance.
How do I size the chain correctly?
The standard method is to route the chain through the front and rear derailleur without threading it through the rear derailleur cage, then add two links to the length where the ends meet. Alternatively, use the largest chainring and largest sprocket method: route the chain through both without the rear derailleur, add two links, and cut to length. The Quick Link connects the two ends once sized correctly.
How often should I replace the chain?
Replace the chain before it reaches 0.75% wear (measured with a chain wear indicator tool) to avoid accelerated wear on the cassette and chainrings. On a 12-speed drivetrain, regular chain replacement is particularly important as the narrower chain and sprockets wear faster than wider 10 or 11-speed systems. Keeping the chain clean and lubricated will significantly extend its service life.
