The Surly Ultra New Mountain Rear hub builds on a trusted design with thoughtful enhancements that elevate performance and convenience. Crafted from durable 6061 T6 forged and machined aluminum alloy, the hub shell retains its robust medium-height flanges, ensuring strength and reliability on rugged trails. The real innovation lies in its internal components, designed to simplify use and improve durability without compromising the classic Surly feel.
Featuring hollow axles of Surly’s own design paired with threaded wheel fixing bolts, the Ultra New hub makes converting to a quick release effortless—just swap the bolts for a quick release skewer and get riding. The CroMoly steel axle and high-grade 10.9 stainless steel bolts offer excellent corrosion resistance and strength, while the stainless steel bolt caps and cone nuts provide secure grip and prevent wheel slippage under high stress. With non-adjustable 6901 bearings sealed inside, maintenance is minimal, letting you focus on your ride.
Surly also offers retrofit kits that allow you to upgrade existing New hubs to the Ultra New standard, including all necessary hardware such as new axles, bolts, and bearings. Compatible with 135mm spacing, fixed/freewheel sprocket threads, and available in black or silver with 32 holes, this hub delivers a precise chainline of 51.5mm—ideal for serious mountain biking enthusiasts who value durability and ease of use.
Can I convert the Ultra New hub from fixed to quick release easily?
Yes, the design includes hollow axles and threaded fixing bolts that allow a quick swap to a quick release skewer with no axle changes required.
Is this hub compatible with my existing New hub?
Surly offers retrofit kits that enable you to upgrade your New hub to the Ultra New standard, including all necessary hardware like axles, bolts, and bearings.

To Qualify for FREE Shipping:
In some cases, we may ship items out with another courier, depending on the status and availability of items ordered. (Customers will not be charged more and will be refunded any unused postage cost) If part of an order is cancelled and the total drops below the £50.00 free postage, a postage charge may be taken.
Delivery costs will be clearly stated on the checkout page, though you will need to register (to provide your delivery address) in order to see the delivery costs.

You may return most new, unopened items within 30 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).
You should expect to receive your refund within four weeks of giving your package to the return shipper, however, in many cases you will receive a refund more quickly. This time period includes the transit time for us to receive your return from the shipper (5 to 10 business days), the time it takes us to process your return once we receive it (3 to 5 business days), and the time it takes your bank to process our refund request (5 to 10 business days).
If you need to return an item, simply login to your account, view the order using the "Complete Orders" link under the My Account menu and click the Return Item(s) button. We'll notify you via e-mail of your refund once we've received and processed the returned item.
