The Trek Fuel+ EX 9.9 X0 AXS Gen 2 is Trek's flagship trail e-MTB — the top-specification build on the second-generation Fuel+ EX platform. The motor is the TQ HPR50, a compact, lightweight mid-drive unit that produces 50Nm of torque and is significantly smaller and lighter than conventional e-MTB motors, allowing the Fuel+ EX to handle and feel closer to an acoustic trail bike than most e-MTBs. The TQ system uses a harmonic pin ring drive rather than a conventional gear reduction, resulting in a smooth, natural power delivery with minimal drag when the motor is not assisting. The frame is 900 Series OCLV Carbon, Trek's highest-grade carbon construction, made in Germany. The defining feature of the Fuel+ EX Gen 2 platform is its three adjustable trail configurations — the geometry and suspension kinematics can be adjusted between three distinct setups to suit different trail types and rider preferences, from a more upright, playful setup to a longer, slacker aggressive trail position.
The complete build uses SRAM X0 AXS wireless electronic shifting — SRAM's second-tier AXS groupset, providing reliable wireless shifting without the weight penalty of a full mechanical system. Suspension is high-specification front and rear, suited to the bike's trail e-MTB brief. Available in 5 sizes (S, M, L, XL, XXL) and 3 colours: Carbon Smoke/Lithium Grey Marble, Gloss Navy Smoke/Matte Trek Black, and Lichen Green/Keswick Green Splatter. For the lower-specification build on the same platform, see the Trek Fuel+ EX 9.8 Eagle 90 Gen 2. Browse our full e-mountain bike collection.
What makes the TQ HPR50 motor different from other e-MTB motors?
The TQ HPR50 uses a harmonic pin ring drive mechanism rather than the conventional planetary gear reduction used by Bosch, Shimano EP8, and most other e-MTB motors. This results in a significantly smaller and lighter motor unit, lower drag when unassisted, and a smoother, more natural power delivery. The trade-off is lower peak torque (50Nm vs 85Nm+ for Bosch Performance CX) — the TQ system prioritises ride feel and weight over maximum assistance. Riders who want the most natural e-MTB experience will prefer the TQ; riders who want maximum hill-climbing power may prefer a higher-torque system.
What are the three trail configurations and how do I switch between them?
The Fuel+ EX Gen 2 frame includes a flip chip or geometry adjustment system that allows the head angle, bottom bracket height, and chainstay length to be adjusted between three distinct positions. Each configuration changes the bike's handling character — from a more upright, playful setup suited to technical trail riding to a longer, slacker position suited to faster, more aggressive terrain. Switching between configurations requires basic tools and takes approximately 15–20 minutes. The bike ships in a default configuration; Trek's geometry charts detail the specific angles and measurements for each setting.
What is the battery capacity and expected range?
The TQ HPR50 system uses a compact integrated battery. Range varies significantly based on trail gradient, assist level, rider weight, and terrain — the TQ system's lower power output and efficient motor design typically deliver competitive range for a trail e-MTB despite the smaller battery. For specific battery capacity and range estimates, contact us or refer to Trek's current specification sheet for the Fuel+ EX Gen 2.
How does the Fuel+ EX 9.9 differ from the Fuel+ EX 9.8?
Both bikes share the same 900 Series OCLV Carbon frame and TQ HPR50 motor system with three adjustable trail configurations. The 9.9 upgrades to SRAM X0 AXS wireless electronic shifting; the 9.8 uses SRAM Eagle 90 mechanical shifting. The 9.9 is the top-specification build; the 9.8 offers the same platform and motor at a lower price point with a mechanical drivetrain.
