The Trek Fuel+ LX 9.8 Eagle 90 Gen 2 is the entry point into Trek's Fuel+ LX e-MTB range — a longer-travel, more aggressive trail platform than the Fuel+ EX, built around the same TQ HPR50 compact mid-drive motor. The TQ HPR50 produces 50Nm of torque via a harmonic pin ring drive mechanism, resulting in a significantly smaller and lighter motor unit than conventional e-MTB motors (Bosch, Shimano EP8, etc.), lower drag when unassisted, and a smoother, more natural power delivery. The frame is 900 Series OCLV Carbon, Trek's highest-grade carbon construction, made in Germany. Like the rest of the Gen 2 Fuel+ LX range, this bike features three adjustable trail configurations — geometry and suspension kinematics can be tuned between three distinct setups to suit different trail types and rider preferences.
The 9.8 build uses SRAM Eagle 90 mechanical shifting — a reliable, proven 12-speed drivetrain that delivers the same platform and motor experience as the higher-spec builds at a lower price point. Available in 5 sizes (S, M, L, XL, XXL) and 3 colours: Carbon Smoke/Lithium Grey Marble, Gloss Navy Smoke/Matte Trek Black, and Lichen Green/Keswick Green Splatter. For electronic shifting on the same platform, see the Trek Fuel+ LX 9.8 XT Di2 Gen 2 or the top-specification Trek Fuel+ LX 9.9 X0 AXS Gen 2. For the shorter-travel Fuel+ EX platform, see the Trek Fuel+ EX 9.9 X0 AXS Gen 2. Browse our full e-mountain bike collection.
What is the difference between the Fuel+ LX and the Fuel+ EX?
The Fuel+ LX is a longer-travel, more aggressive trail platform than the Fuel+ EX. The LX is designed for more technical, demanding terrain where additional suspension travel provides greater capability and confidence. The EX is a shorter-travel trail bike that balances climbing efficiency with descending capability. Both platforms share the TQ HPR50 motor and 900 Series OCLV Carbon frame construction.
What are the three trail configurations and how do I switch between them?
The Fuel+ LX Gen 2 frame includes a geometry adjustment system that allows the head angle, bottom bracket height, and chainstay length to be adjusted between three distinct positions. Each configuration changes the bike's handling character to suit different terrain and riding styles. Switching requires basic tools and takes approximately 15–20 minutes. Trek's geometry charts detail the specific angles and measurements for each setting.
Why choose the 9.8 Eagle 90 over the 9.8 XT Di2 or 9.9 X0 AXS?
The 9.8 Eagle 90 uses SRAM Eagle 90 mechanical shifting — a reliable, well-proven 12-speed drivetrain that delivers the same frame, motor, and three-configuration platform as the higher-spec builds at a lower price point. Mechanical shifting requires no battery charging and is straightforward to service. The XT Di2 and X0 AXS builds add electronic shifting for effortless, precise gear changes but at a higher cost. If budget is a priority and you're comfortable with mechanical shifting, the 9.8 Eagle 90 is the most accessible entry into the Fuel+ LX Gen 2 platform.
What is the battery capacity and expected range?
The TQ HPR50 system uses a compact integrated battery. Range varies based on trail gradient, assist level, rider weight, and terrain. The TQ motor's efficient design typically delivers competitive range for a trail e-MTB. For specific battery capacity and range estimates, contact us or refer to Trek's current specification sheet for the Fuel+ LX Gen 2.
