The Trek Fuel+ LX 9.8 XT Di2 Gen 2 is the mid-specification build in Trek's Fuel+ LX e-MTB range, stepping up from the Fuel+ LX 9.8 Eagle 90 with Shimano XT Di2 electronic shifting. The motor is the TQ HPR50 — a compact, lightweight mid-drive unit producing 50Nm of torque via a harmonic pin ring drive mechanism. This results in a significantly smaller and lighter motor than conventional e-MTB motors (Bosch, Shimano EP8, etc.), lower drag when unassisted, and a smoother, more natural power delivery that makes the Fuel+ LX feel closer to an acoustic trail bike than most e-MTBs. The frame is 900 Series OCLV Carbon, Trek's highest-grade carbon construction, made in Germany. Like all Gen 2 Fuel+ LX builds, this bike features three adjustable trail configurations — geometry and suspension kinematics can be tuned between three distinct setups to suit different trail types and rider preferences.
Shimano XT Di2 is Shimano's electronic shifting system at the XT level — providing precise, reliable, button-activated gear changes without the need for cable tension adjustment. Di2 shifting is consistent regardless of conditions, requires no manual cable maintenance, and can be customised via the Shimano E-TUBE app for shift timing and multi-shift functions. This makes the XT Di2 build a strong choice for riders who want electronic shifting reliability without stepping up to the top-specification Fuel+ LX 9.9 X0 AXS with wireless SRAM shifting. Available in 5 sizes (S, M, L, XL, XXL) and 3 colours: Carbon Smoke/Lithium Grey Marble, Gloss Navy Smoke/Matte Trek Black, and Lichen Green/Keswick Green Splatter. For the mechanical shifting build, see the Fuel+ LX 9.8 Eagle 90. Browse our full e-mountain bike collection.
What is the difference between Shimano XT Di2 and SRAM X0 AXS on the Fuel+ LX 9.9?
Both are electronic shifting systems but from different manufacturers with different connectivity approaches. Shimano XT Di2 uses wired electronic connections between components — reliable and proven, with no wireless signal to manage. SRAM X0 AXS is fully wireless, with no cables between the shifter and derailleur. Both provide precise, effortless shifting; the choice often comes down to brand preference, ecosystem compatibility, and budget. The XT Di2 build is priced below the X0 AXS build while delivering the same frame, motor, and three-configuration platform.
What are the three trail configurations?
The Fuel+ LX Gen 2 frame includes a geometry adjustment system allowing the head angle, bottom bracket height, and chainstay length to be adjusted between three distinct positions. Each configuration changes the bike's handling character — from a more upright, playful setup to a longer, slacker aggressive trail position. Switching requires basic tools and takes approximately 15–20 minutes.
How does the TQ HPR50 motor compare to Bosch or Shimano EP8?
The TQ HPR50 produces 50Nm of torque — lower than Bosch Performance CX (85Nm) or Shimano EP8 (85Nm). The trade-off is a significantly smaller, lighter motor unit with lower drag when unassisted and a more natural power delivery. Riders who prioritise ride feel and a bike that handles like an acoustic trail bike will prefer the TQ; riders who want maximum hill-climbing assistance may prefer a higher-torque system.
Can I customise the Di2 shifting behaviour?
Yes — Shimano XT Di2 can be customised via the Shimano E-TUBE Project app (iOS and Android), allowing you to adjust shift timing, set up multi-shift (shifting multiple gears with a single button press), and configure junction box settings. The app connects via Bluetooth and is straightforward to use.
