The Trek FX Sport AL 3 is Trek's top-specification aluminium flat bar fitness bike — a fast, efficient hybrid designed for riders who want road bike performance in a more upright, accessible package. The frame is Alpha Aluminium with Trek's Active geometry, which positions the rider slightly more upright than a road bike while maintaining an efficient, forward-leaning posture suited to faster riding. The result is a bike that is quicker and more responsive than a comfort hybrid, but less aggressive and more accessible than a drop-bar road bike. The drivetrain is Shimano 105 — the same groupset found on mid-range road bikes — providing precise, reliable shifting across a wide gear range suited to both urban riding and longer fitness rides. The bike uses 700c wheels with narrower, faster-rolling tyres suited to tarmac and smooth surfaces. Available in 5 sizes (XS, S, M, L, XL) and 3 colours: Buff Beige, Cobra Blood, and Keswick.
The FX Sport AL 3 sits at the top of the aluminium FX Sport range, stepping up from lower-spec FX models with the Shimano 105 groupset and a more performance-focused specification. It is well-suited to riders who commute regularly and also want to use the same bike for fitness rides and longer weekend routes, without the commitment of a full road bike position. For the carbon-framed step-up, see the Trek FX Sport SL 4 with a carbon frame and 1x drivetrain. Browse our full hybrid bikes collection and fitness bikes range.
What is the difference between the FX Sport AL 3 and the FX Sport SL 4?
The FX Sport AL 3 uses an Alpha Aluminium frame; the FX Sport SL 4 steps up to a carbon frame, which is lighter and provides additional vibration damping for a more refined ride. The SL 4 also uses a 1x drivetrain (single chainring, no front derailleur) for a cleaner, lower-maintenance setup. The AL 3 is the top aluminium build; the SL 4 is the entry into the carbon FX Sport range.
What is Trek's Active geometry?
Active geometry is Trek's term for the FX Sport's riding position — more forward-leaning and efficient than a comfort hybrid, but less aggressive than a road bike. The handlebar height and reach are set to encourage an engaged, efficient pedalling position while remaining accessible for riders who are not comfortable with a full road bike posture. It suits riders who want to ride faster and further than a typical hybrid allows, without committing to a drop-bar bike.
Can I fit mudguards and a rack to the FX Sport AL 3?
The FX Sport AL 3 is a performance-focused fitness bike and has limited mounting points compared to the standard FX range. Mudguard compatibility depends on tyre clearance and frame eyelets — clip-on mudguards are typically the most practical option. A rear rack is not supported on the Sport AL 3. If rack and mudguard compatibility is important, the Trek FX 3 Disc or FX 4 Disc are better suited.
What size should I choose?
The FX Sport AL 3 is available in XS, S, M, L, and XL. As a general guide: XS suits riders approximately 152–162cm; S suits 162–170cm; M suits 170–178cm; L suits 178–186cm; XL suits 186cm+. Trek provides a detailed fit guide on their website. If you are between sizes or unsure, contact us before ordering and we can advise based on your height and inseam.
